In 2000, 2Pac’s posthumous album Still I Risewas released. It featured the contributions of the independent artists Outlawz, including Tha Dogg Pound, Big Brovaz and Souls Of Mischief. However, several “great additions to the collection” were pulled in due to some bootleg recordings. The album reached number 15 on the Billboard 200 chart. It was certified gold.
In 2002, 2Pac’s compilation album The Greatest Hitswas released. It featured two bonus tracks, an un-released collaboration with Daz called “Here We Go Again”, and the unreleased solo track “Pac’s Back”.
The label closed, but was later revived after Suge Knight’s legal troubles and divorce from Death Row Records. Lawsuits prompted the absence of 2Pac and Suge, while Iovine’s departure from Death Row Records amid creative differences stalled plans for an East Coast version of Death Row Records. However, in 2005, Death Row Records, home of 2Pac and Death Row Records artists Snoop Dogg, including Tha Dogg Pound, and The Game, re-launched itself as Empire Records and Thug Life Records. Bouncing back, the label released Cold’s 2004 album, The Conspirator and The Game’s 2004 album Still D.R.E.
In 2004, Apple snatched up a 19-track song from the vault of Dr. Dre’s and Snoop Dogg’s labels. The collection, calledThe Chronic 2001, was inspired by Dre’s 2001 movie,and brought together Snoop, Dre and The Game. 1,500 copies of it were distributed as a test, and it became the world’s fastest-selling album. As a result of its success, Interscope Records chose to release the rest of its vault in the following years. In August of 2005, Let there be Dr. Drewas released, with 2Pac’s work featuring on nine of the album’s 12 tracks. After the controversy caused by Janet Jackson at the 2004 Super Bowl,it was pulled from the album and changed to a new song, “Vans/Pac Says Fuck You”.
2Pac’s first major collaboration outside of his own solo albums was with G-Unit, whom he met while he was in jail. He began recording, producing, and marketing the rap collective’s The Album, independently at first and then through Interscope. Shortly after, amid friction between 2Pac and Suge Knight, Dr. Dre and Death Row, and Robert ‘Dre’sBad Boy Records, G-Unit was told that their contracts with Death Row and Interscope would not be renewed, and 2Pac came to the same conclusion himself, fleeing Death Row and signing to Dre’s Southern California label, Aftermath Entertainment, for a reported pay-per-view album release. 2Pac’s allegiance to Dre over Suge and his camp was solidified by the early 1996 release of The Mirroran album directed and presented by Dre, which saw 2Pac as producer, engineer, and performer.
In the year following his move to Aftermath, 2Pac made a series of cameos on Dre’s albums; he was featured on Dre’s The Chronic 2001 as well as Snoop’s Doggystyle, which was released in ’99 as well.
2Pac’s final album Before his death was debut 1999 release Me Against Myself, which placed the rapper as one of the foremost socially conscious rappers, infusing his storytelling with anti-gang and political commentary. It reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200, the first mainstream music release to do so since the Beatles’ Revolver in 1966.
His album The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory would reach No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and it was during this period that the bad blood and internal strife between Knight and 2Pac’s camp reached its climax. The murder trial of Suge Knight’s friend in 2000 led to incriminating tape recordings from the suite at Los Angeles, the LAX Hilton Hotel, and Death Row. Several of 2Pac’s most loyal friends, including Tupac’s cousin A.C. Bennett, Biggie’s brother Christopher Wallace, and Suge Knight’s friend Darryl “D.O.C.” Williams were implicated as the masterminds of the murder.
