we were also surprised to find that in spite of the fact that all the hcp were involved in administering imci in their facilities, only few hcps were confident in the management of sick children. although they were not statistical significant (table 6, p = 0.06) this is an area that the imci programme needs to focus on. in spite of the negative overall opinion about standard imci, almost all the hcps agreed on the validity of imci in practice (table 7 ), although they agreed that some concepts have changed over the years and this was a challenge of the imci programme. as expected, the majority of the hcps appreciated the free services provided during the distance learning imci course like contact hours, live online meetings, access to the online course materials, q & a sessions and opportunities to share experiences with other imci practitioners. this again is an area that the imci programme should prioritise.

also, we did not implement a control group; we did not know what imci hcps would have done without distance learning imci and there was no comparison group as there was no comparable intervention for assessment. however, using a comparison group in a low and middle income country as this one limits the external validity of the study. this was an exploratory study

the last but not the least, we found that imci training and child health documentation is a task-oriented job. the positive impact of distance learning imci was sustainable because of appropriate job aides. the results imply that distance learning imci is a cost-effective method of training hcps in rural health care facilities and integrated systems.

distance learning imci as a learning method and methodology enables the development of customized learning programs and better targeting of programs with minimal wastage of training time, materials and money.
findings from this evaluation can be used to develop an effective strategy for training of hcps in rural health care centers, strengthening of the health care system, and improving the quality of care. in future, we plan to evaluate the performance of distance learning imci on outcomes such as survival and health care utilization.
in africa, as well as in asia and latin america, more evidence is required on the effectiveness and impact of the various implementation models for delivering health education to the community, more specifically, the community-based participatory research (cbpr). recent additions to the global health workforce alliance (ghwa) include community-based participatory learning (cbpl)
the ghwa would like to bring together the practice of and the theory behind community-based participatory research, training and education (cbpe), so as to create a robust and sustainable community-led infrastructure. cbpl requires training, which ghwa would like to support (see https://ghwa.org/site-map/practice/). cbpl could focus on collaborative action research, the development of community-based health and social care priorities, self-management skills and skills in partnership and leadership, and the facilitation of intersectoral action. it could serve to develop a responsive and effective local knowledge base on behalf of the community.
