In Shift 1, you could customize a few things through the cars drivable parts, but that seemed to be a bit limited. There were very few options available and the only time I ran into a drivable part was during my first race. The game also had some obstacles that I could choose to climb during those same races, but they weren’t consistent between races. They never made me use a specific route. You also couldn’t see the course you were racing on because it just didn’t show up in the view. This was awesome in Shift because I could see that I had to come through an area that was really tricky, and if I passed it at the wrong time, I could flip over or crash. But in Shift 1 I had to try my best without a third party being able to see my course and give me helpful hints or items. So if you had the chance to play GT5 you should. GT5 feels just like driving a race car.

You get to choose your vehicle of choice. Which I think is great. GT5 had what felt like a cookie cutter even I had to say, I felt no choice but to go with the Mustang. In Shift 2 you get to pick which car you like best. This is my favorite feature. Then you get the drivable parts and the upgrade system to customize your car to your liking. You can also go to any trainer to get practice runs and laps of the track before a race. This is great because you don’t have to just start a race with the same car you drive normally. If you wreck and destroy your car, you can find a new one or if you want, you can just let the car go and repair it by the end of the race.

Tire grip was a mechanic by itself. I remembered the first race I drove being the time I stalled out at the start line waiting for my tires to heat up. I was on a track with a lot of low speed corners, and I would skip out of the race line to warm up those tires, so I wouldn’t get taken out by the other cars before I got started. The other mechanic was brake bias. I remember when I was racing in a video game like GT3 or Shift 1, where when you reach a certain speed, the brake bias goes from max to 0. Basically you just go from a hard lock to no lock. In Shift 1 if you switched from A to B, the car didn’t have any grip. Switching from A to B in GT5 would reduce your top speed by 6 mph. It’s a mechanic that makes sense.
