Understanding a layer
Every image in Photoshop is contained in a layer, just like the layers in Painter CS6 and the layers in a Pages, InDesign, or Publisher file (see Chapter 2 for more on each of these applications). The layers in an image are stacked one on top of another, forming a multi-layered document. In any Photoshop image, the top layer is the one that displays on your screen. The bottom layer is hidden.
To add a new layer to an image, press Ctrl+T (Windows) or Command+T (Mac), and choose Layer from the New Layer pop-up menu. Figure 4-1 shows a basic image without any layers.
Illustrator and Dreamweaver users, hold on a minute! Yes, Photoshop has layers, but for some mysterious reason, you can’t create layers in the same way. In Photoshop, you can have all the layers visible or one layer visible, with the other layers hidden. To make a layer visible, double-click its thumbnail in the Layers panel. To make a layer hidden, choose Layer from the Layer menu.
After you create a layer, you can fill it with color, insert text, create shapes, or do other things with your image. Each layer has its own color, style, type, and size.
