The ideas behind the LifeCycle have been around in various forms since the 80s, but Van Mayer has found a modern way to express these concepts and bring them to life with an instrument that functions as a hybrid between a patch-based instrument and a synthesizer. LifeCycle is a multi-modal instrument that allows you to create patterns by manually tweaking the patch, generating the patterns in real-time, or stepping through predefined patterns with the sequence or step buttons. John Conway’s Game Of Life is an elaborate abstract cellular automaton, which today is widely regarded as one of the best examples of artificial life. In the past decade or so, researchers have applied the game of life to many disciplines, most notably physics, biology, chemistry, sociology, economics and computational geometry.
So, I have developed a pattern-based auto-synth based on the game of life. The resultant patterns are used to drive a slew of operators that make the guitar’s inner working quite expressive. They can be poly-synth-driven, either as rhythm or lead, with huge amounts of modulation (via pitch bend). They can be manipulated in unison with an external keyboard or with a solo performance.

The purpose of this post is to give a brief overview of how to create the life patterns in LifeCycle. The output of the sound module is a collection of lists that can be used with the LifeOperators to create life patterns.
In the next section we will start with the most fundamental patterns: Cells and Pixels.

The white space in the sequence above represents the list of integers that make up the pattern. In this case, it is an 11-by-11 grid of cells. The lists can be of arbitrary size with the same properties as the cell and pixel patterns.

“Possibly one of the biggest breakthroughs I ever made was to realize that Life is a game, but my idea of a game was much different. Instead of looking at patterns, I looked at the ‘cells’ and tried to make maps and fields. I’ll start with numbers, and when you give it numbers that look good, they look good in the game. I believe I have found a way to make music and rhyme using patterns that are static. I started to mix in samples from the game and removed all the samples to reveal and understand the patterns. Then with samples, I figured out how to turn it into a game: 1, 0, 1, 0, 0, 1, 0, 1, 0, 1, 0, 1, 0, 1, 0, 0, 1, 0, 0, 1, etc.
For example, when you have more 1s, you see more of the borders and when you have more 0s you see less of the borders. I started to play around and eventually was stuck on the two number pattern, 1, 0, 1, 0, 0, 1, 0, 1, 0, 1, 0, 1, 0, 1, 0, 0, 1, 0, 0, 1, etc. I played with the samples to find where they moved, and the discovery was that you could actually map into numbers using the samples as a basis, using the above pattern.
