Expectations satisfied and even exceeded, the excellent online elements of the new fantasy action RPG, Rise, Tarnished. That was the feeling I had after finishing the main scenario quests for the FOUR paths. I felt that I had the chance to experience a lot of fresh, fun action game play by combining the online elements with the story and quests on my own. I also had the chance to experience a different aspect of the game from the perspective of online communications.
As always, the quest system is of course very good. It is easy to feel satisfied as you progress through the main story quests, and are given the opportunity to choose which of the four paths you want to take. However, when you reach the end of the main story quests, you can continue playing on your own, and even return to where you left off before the quest.
Since the maps are open, you can freely roam around and meet other online players without being restricted by the option of whether to follow the predetermined path. Thanks to this feature, it is easy to get an entirely new experience.
Although there are also restrictions on getting items, it has been a lot less complicated than the other online RPGs that I played, and I am grateful for that.
If you were to compare this game to other games with a similar online play element, it is like the improved version of the first-person shooter, Defense Grid. That is to say, the main story is divided up into missions, and while progressing through the story in order to beat up monsters and collect items, you can play online via the game system. However, while playing online, there is a big difference from the first-person shooter, and it is like a RPG.
For example, there are character levels, and you have the chance to equip a variety of weapons and armor. Also, you can create a map by placing items from other players. You can also send out invitations to other players to play a game, and exchange items or use a lottery system. The biggest issue with the game is the combat. It’s not entirely clear if it’s supposed to be real time. Since combat is quick it’s almost like a mini MMO. I think if you’re going to add a PvP mode to this it would need to be “low priority.” In fact the low priority PvP content is a much bigger issue than the game overall. The game is made to be a PvE game, which is great if you’re ready to take a break from the world.
