The final week of E3 saw the release of The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes. Whereas its previous iterations used mechanics from the 3DS title Majora’s Mask, Tri Force Heroes expanded upon that with the addition of extra heroes, a new mechanic called the “Link’s Awakening” system, a blue-eyed frog, and some more puzzles and exploration. After spending a week with it and pulling together a fully-fledged, indepth playthrough video, here’s what I think of the game.
Story
This might be one of the most divisive aspects of the game. Tri Force Heroes takes place after the events of Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages. The two Deities have been defeated and the world has returned to what it looked like in the classic The Legend of Zelda, before Majora’s Mask 3D.
Takashi Sugano, who wrote both Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages, did not return to write Tri Force Heroes. Instead, Professor Eiji Naka stepped up and created the story, borrowing from the universe of Ocarina of Time and The Wind Waker.
“Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes” isn’t really a traditional roleplaying game. It has an actual story, but by and large, you’re free to just move forward and explore different dungeons and areas. There’s a lot of backtracking, and backtracking is generally a big part of the Legend of Zelda. This time, it’s added to the main story, which I think is a good change. It’s a little more concrete and more fleshed out.
I’m not in love with this story for the same reason I didn’t love the Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening. It’s not really about the story, it’s just using it to help get you around and keep your curiosity piqued. Like before, you’re free to just explore the dungeon as you please, but the story itself is nothing too exciting or memorable. It’s what you do with the story that really mattered to me.
