According to the company’s website, AutoCAD LT is designed as a “lean” alternative to AutoCAD, as the program is designed to load quickly and work on standard personal computers, including laptops. AutoCAD LT also requires no training and has a simpler user interface.
History
AutoCAD originated as an in-house CAD design system used to create drawings and technical drawings for the Navistar Defense Corporation in 1970. Originally named the NACAD (Navistar AutoCAD) system, it was developed by James Caton, a senior engineer at Navistar. Caton envisioned an application that would provide “the requisite tools for automatically creating custom, technical drawings for a range of defense products”. It was originally developed for Navistar’s C71™ mainframe, running on the MOS Technology 6502 microprocessor and using the first generation of the Vax operating system. MOS Technology had licensed the 6502 to National Semiconductor in 1970. The application was a very rapid prototyping system for defense industry engineers. It is sometimes described as the first CAD program, though the first such system is not entirely clear. Other early CAD systems include Commodore’s Centaur system (1968) and the American Auto-Cad system (1971), which was ported to the C71.
AutoCAD became commercially available in December 1982, and was first published by the American Management Association’s Creative Publishing Company. The application was developed by AutoDesk, which was founded in 1983 by three men, James F. Davis, Ken Silverman, and Jeff Smith, who later renamed their company Autodesk.
One of the original goals of AutoDesk was to make CAD available to non-engineers. AutoCAD began to be sold to the public on the desktop via distributers in 1984, and was formally released to the public by Creative Publishing in September 1985. Distribution was marketed to the architectural and engineering community in 1985 by McGraw-Hill Construction. In 1986 Autodesk formed its first sales and marketing company, called Autodesk, Inc. Distribution to architectural and engineering firms continued through 1988.
In 1990, Autodesk introduced the DWG format, a new graphical file format replacing the older DXF format. In 1993, Autodesk became a public company. In 1996, Autodesk acquired the intellectual property rights to AutoCAD and introduced new features and enhancements.

AutoCAD Video enables the creation of video to show content from AutoCAD and other products.
AutoCAD Video Editor allows the creation and editing of video files in the popular AVI file format.
AutoCAD Mobile is a mobile version of AutoCAD, designed for Android and iOS operating systems.
