## Moving, Copying, and Cutting Layers
The most common way to create a new layer is to use the New Layer button. But if you prefer to use the keyboard, here’s the process:
1. **2 Click on the layer thumbnail on the Layers palette to select that layer.**
Your photo appears selected on the canvas, and when you click the layer thumbnail, as shown in Figure 9-2, the layer information appears on the Layers palette.
2. **3 Drag the pointer across the canvas to create a new layer.**

In Figure 9-3, you can see that the layer thumbnail on the Layers palette is the same size and shape as the thumbnail on the canvas.

Make a change on a layer to see how it affects the pixels on the original photo.
You can move, copy, and cut layers. You can also use the layer’s position in the Layers palette to locate where a layer is. To see this, you first need to click the Layer Icon, shown in the margin, to select the layer that you want to work on. (Don’t worry: I cover more about layers in the next section.)
