The fact is that the brain processes audio quite differently than electronic electronics. Music is a kind of emotional language, music has rhythm and melody, like words. When we hear music, we “understand” it.
However, our brain – and therefore our ear – recognises only the difference between tones of about one half of a cent. Let us consider an example:
A = pitch of C A B E F G
B = pitch of C B C C C C
E = pitch of G E A C
Our brain will perceive the difference between A and B as a high point and a low point in the song. Our brain will perceive E as having the same tone as C.
A common trick is to sustain the tone while lowering its volume. The effect of this technique is that the word “C” is not just heard as “C”, but rather as “C C C”, or “C C C”.
When we see this effect happen on a video screen, our eyes “make up” the missing high tone. Our brain will receive the same tones as before, because it is “mind-processing” what our eyes have “seen”.
Music cannot be heard as “an electronic version” of what we hear as a human. This is our purpose for having hardware amplifiers – to bring the sound of the human being to a level that is “normal” to our brain.
As far as our brain is concerned, it only identifies notes – as notes – and not the space between the notes.
This means we need to make notes in such a way that we can identify the difference between them. This is where our ears and our brain recognize music.

￭ To control the stereo level of the low frequencies just load up the track (or multiple tracks) into Basslane and start manipulating the “Center” knob.
￭ While the “Center” knob is being dragged the low frequency content of the audio track is stretched horizontally.
￭ Dragging the center knob upwards will lower the low frequencies and the opposite is true.
￭ By default the low frequencies stretch 4:1.
￭ Dragging the “Stereo Width” knob will affect the amount of stretching (from 4:1 to 16:1, or even more, according to the stereo width factor).
￭ By default the “Stereo Width” knob is set to 1.
￭ Sliders below “Center” and “Stereo Width” allow you to fine-tune the processing of the center frequencies and widen or tighten the stereo field to achieve optimal results.
￭ Monitoring options let you hear the effect as it is being applied to your track. You can compare the original and processed tracks directly, monitor them at the same time, or listen only to the processed audio track.
￭ The effect can be paused and resumed at any time.
￭ You can also define the low frequencies to be processed (the processed audio track will always be 4:1 stretched).
￭ You can load a 32-bit sample for your processed track.
￭ Input channel assignments are remembered after you have loaded a few tracks.
￭ The “Center” and “Stereo Width” sliders can be saved to the FXBasslane settings.
￭ Settings can be saved to disk, or to a user defined FXBasslane profile.
