GODFREY, Minn. — “A sign says, ‘Founded in 1883,'” Ted Cruz says as he drives around town. “Meaning the Free Soil Party, which is a sort of revolutionary movement. It’s before the Civil War, so it’s the Free Soil Party.

“So in Minnesota, we needed to have the Free Soil Party as well. One of the causes that the Free Soil Party brought forward was to impose a tariff on imported goods, which would really have really hurt Minnesota as a breadbasket. And so yes, I mean it’s the most fascinating political past of my life.”

On a recent evening in this small city 90 miles north of the Twin Cities, one could start a lecture with one of Cruz’s conclusions: Minnesotans are wrong about him. Then move forward to the next one: He thinks the best strategy for getting back on his feet in the 2016 election cycle is to vilify Hillary Clinton.

“She wants to put on this façade of being this nice woman. But if you go behind the scenes, you’ll see she’s really angry at the way she was rejected by the country she wanted so desperately to be president of,” he said in a later conversation with MinnPost.

“That’s one of the reasons she wants the debates. Even though she can’t be stopped, she wants to go back and forth with these zingers. And, yes, I’ll tell you, a friend of mine who happens to be the head of MSNBC, I call up regularly and say, ‘You do realize what a huge mistake you’ve made?’

“It’s one of the reasons why people hate politics. I mean, we’re not selling widgets. We’re selling ourselves. People want to hear what we have to say, but then they hate the process. And they hate the process because they think you can’t have a back-and-forth. Politics has gotten too scripted, I mean, it’s gotten like a three-hour infomercial.

“People think we’re all robots. And in politics, yeah, you got

The `mouseup` and `mousedown` events give you two ways to get the mouse coordinates. They might seem a bit odd, but they’re useful. For example, suppose you don’t want to do anything when the user clicks on a certain box. All you want to do is alert the user. The way to do that is to add a call to the `mouseup` event handler:

$(document).click(function(event) {
if(!$(event.target).closest(‘.box’).length) { alert(‘You clicked me’); }
event.stopPropagation();
});

Beware of the word _event_ in that code. The `click` event handler is expecting an _event_ object as a parameter. The browser really won’t let you send you hand back up to the top-level event handler in your `click` event handler. To send that back up, you have to add a parameter to the `click` event handler that points to your `event` variable in the `mouseup` handler.

In addition, this won’t do anything unless the user clicks within one of the boxes. To make sure that’s so, you’ll see that the `mousedown` event handler checks for `.box` elements in addition to checking the target element. If the mouse leaves the target element, the `mouseup` will not fire. You can use an intersection as long as you know that’s what you’re doing. It’s also important to add the `event.stopPropagation()` call to the `mousedown` handler so that when the user tries to click outside the target element, the event doesn’t bubble up to the `click` event handler:

$(document).ready(function() {
