It is time to raise the question of plagiarism. One finds innumerable articles of Maharaja Jarmani Das’, who passed away in 1997, being plagiarised. And the worst offenders are to be found in his book, written under the pen name, Jarmani Das. I am sure he is not the sole culprit; there are many others who have lifted his book. This is a deliberate ploy of the publishers who have not checked the sources. As a fact, it is the publishers who bear the brunt of the accusation that the book is plagiarised.
Thirteen chapters in Maharaja are, and indeed, the whole of Jarmani Das’ book, is lifted from articles in the columns of the British newspaper, Statesman, published regularly in Mumbai (Bombay). The figures, names of princes, place-names, villages and events, wherever found, have been lifted verbatim from the Statesman. It is not that Jarmani Das’ book has plagiarism in the ordinary sense of the word, but it commits a crime of forgery, since it is a fraud, fabricated on a serious scale.
The book is at least a fraud, at the very least, a dangerous publication of a libel. I feel ashamed to read this book. On the other hand, this is not a book like Jarmani Das’ book, which shamelessly copies the contents of journals, columnists, and news reports and lifts them verbatim. The book is a daily chronicle of the glamorous life of the Maharajas. I feel I shall enjoy reading the book.
The chapter of the book on Maharaja Puran Singh is good indeed. May be I don’t understand the nuances of Maharaja Puran Singh’s life and work. But there is no danger of my making up a story on Puran Singh. All that needs to be done is a perusal of the Statesman journal, which is available at most bookstores.
