Removing the two Performance pads felt like a liberating act, especially as these pads form part of the Serato-exclusive Trinity bundle, with the D-pad pad/Cue’s and the A Hot Cue/B Hot Cue buttons being remapped to the performance pads. This is a sensible decision, as the control room and performance pads sit in the same part of the unit and share the same circuitry. Still, one option that is always welcome is the possibility of having fully configurable controls: its fine to make things easier on the go but there are times when you want to be able to tweak a knob for precise or semi-exact settings, not just perform a preset. Thankfully, the performance pads allow for this. The pads have a good range of travel, with a rock/frisbee grip feel and decent feedback. The buttons can also be programmed to different settings via button customization, so there are options for any pairing of controller and unit.

Battery life is listed as 5 hours per battery. Bear in mind that this is directly linked to the unit. In our experience, a fully charged unit with a half full battery pack lasts a long time (compared to other controllers, anyway).

The DJ-505 is a great controller for the Serato DJ platform. Its big and feature-packed, packed with excellent manual controls. The range of pads is great and the FX and rekordbox compatibility is a very welcome feature, particularly on decks that can be triggered from a PC. It does have some rough edges which have been addressed in updates, including multiple boards, USB transport and, on the software side, split-screen DJing. Serato DJ Pro sounds like it wont have many bugs, which may be good news for features like creative recording and scratching as the software now offers them as separate options from traditional DJing. We hope to hear about these improvements soon.

We enjoy Serato DJ, and we use it in its most basic functions. It sometimes hesitates a bit when transitioning from one effect to another (though this doesnt happen a lot), and sometimes the LCD doesnt feel responsive to our touches. This all comes down to the quality of the unit, which we feel is good for the price. Having said that, Serato is not cheap for a DJ controller, and will cost you about $200 USD. At that price, however, theres a lot to be said for ease of use, and we feel that Serato does its job quite well.
Choosing the best Serato DJ Pro controllers and hardware comes down to how much of an all-in-one solution you need. Serato is still the market leader for DJ software, and offers a comprehensive range of products to suit different budgets and skill levels. While the Serato DJ controllers are the most flexible and adaptable to the music you are making, they are also the most expensive. If you need to produce, then a unit like the Pro-Ject Jumpshot will serve you well.
The mixer has three high-quality eight-inch jog wheels that can be used as scratch controls, as CV/Gate inputs, or to launch Serato Remix and rekordbox scratch effects. Each jog wheel has 12MB of scratch memory for your favorite patterns.
Performance mode for the Serato DJ Pro pads and jogwheels also has a dedicated press-to-remix section. It also has full volume control. There are two volume knobs and two switchable CV/gate controls for pitch and time. There is also a footswitch and many buttons to make performing your track easier. The pads respond to light touch as well as heavy touch for your DJing.
